If you fish from Baja to Perú here is the ultimate fish species reference. It originally was only available via the Smithsonian Institute for Tropical Research's book store located in Panamá. Now it's online in English and Spanish and it's free, check it out!

Many years ago, I read a story in a fishing magazine about a remote area of Panama, called Pedasi. Richard Castaneda who runs Cass Tours was the author of the article. Cass put together an organized trip to go and further explore the Panama small boat fishing. Unfortunately I was still teaching and the trip was also in the middle of Track season. However in the summer I lucked out, finding a cheap one way ticket to Mazatlan after which I hopped buses to Antigua, Guatemala where I stayed for abou…

Blue, clear water moved into the Gulf of Chiriqui this week. That may sound good, however, the lack of plankton biomass (that makes the water look green) scattered the normally reliable bait schools resulting in slow fishing – by Panama standards.
Our “Coral Star” group still caught quality fish, topped by several black marlin to 400 lbs., a 150 lb. blue marlin, 150 lb. yellowfin tuna, 40 lb. roosterfish, 120 lb. hammerhead shark and 55 lb. dorado. The nutrient – poor water was most evident at…

After a month of strong northerly winds it appeared we would have a brief reprieve so we headed off Playa Ciruelo to depart at daybreak figuring if the winds come up we would be back in as is normally the case this time of year at around 10 am. We began trolling cedar plugs with the aim of filling our freezers with Yellow Fin tuna however it seemed we were destined to be catching only Black Skip Jack (bonita, guanco). Being that these are of no good eating and only used for live bait or chunk ba…

When the opportunity came along to test the latest high performance RIB (rigid inflatable boat) from Zodiac – powered by Yamahas massive F350 V-8 outboard- I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I can tell you what I learned. It packs more fun into the driving experience than I can put into words. Maybe it’s the Navy Seals “black ops’ persona of the Zodiac that initially got my adrenaline flowing. Or it could have been the knowledge that the Coast Guard runs similar craft through the enormous waves o…
